What we need to know, is what are we putting into our bodies?
What these food replacements are is something most people don’t consider. To ignore this fact is risky for your health.
How many health conscious people will opt for a salad as a healthy lunch option, choosing a low-fat salad dressing to keep the calories and cholesterol low and the nutrition high?
You MUST ask yourself, what has the fat been replaced with and how?
The answer is actually all the baddies–artificial flavorings, high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils or trans-fats, which are all linked to inflammation, cardio vascular disease and obesity. Anything claiming to be “low fat” needs to be looked at thoroughly before any weight to its health benefits are accepted.
Low in fat will usually mean high in sugars, mostly in the form of corn syrup which, in the United States, seems to be in almost everything!
Breakfast cereals claiming to be low fat, high fiber and contain whole-grains — have a look at the sugar content of bran cereals. It’s about the same as sugar-coated cereals that we avoid giving to children!
The first item on the ingredients list makes up the majority of the food. If sugar is high up on the list, there is plenty there.
Excess amounts of high fructose corn syrup in our diets has been linked to increased risk of obesity, heart disease, kidney disease and others.
Something claiming to be low-fat, such as salad dressing, is not actually beneficial as many of the nutrients present in the salad need a good dose of fats for our bodies to absorb nutrients such as vitamins A, D, E and K, which are fat soluble.
If there is no fat present we cannot absorb the nutrients
Avoid artificial flavorings, hydrogenated fats, trans-fats, corn syrup or sugars.
Good quality, extra virgin olive oil and vinegar, maybe a little mustard and salt and pepper, will do you far more good than a low-fat alternative.
It will also leave you feeling fuller due to the ingestion of fat, which its low-fat alternatives will not, thus potentially causing you to snack in between meals.
Our Mantra for this is…. If the label says “Low Fat” it actually equals “Chemical Storm”.
