Bakuchiol A Natural Retinol Alternative

Bakuchiol is a type of antioxidant compound termed a meroterpene phenol and is most abundantly found in the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea Corylifolia (babchi plant), which is native to India. Which had a long history of use in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for its ability to treat a variety of skin conditions, including vitiligo and eczema, thanks to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiproliferative, and antimicrobial properties.

The research appears to back up bakuchiol's benefits. In one 12-week, double-blind study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, half of the participants were selected to use a topical treatment containing 0.5 percent retinol, and the other half were selected to use one containing 0.5 percent bakuchiol. Researchers discovered that both groups experienced significant but equal improvements in lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, elasticity, and skin firmness with an overall decrease in photo-aging. The bakuchiol group, however, experienced less dryness, scaling, and irritation.

Retinols are not recommended for pregnant women. They may increase the risk for birth defects and miscarriage. According to NORD (National Organization For Rare Disorders) "However, it is known that there is an increased risk of birth defects in women who become pregnant while taking retinoids such as isotretinoin. It is estimated that a 35% risk of fetal retinoid syndrome exists in infants of women who take isotretinoin beyond the 15th day following conception."

Some concerns have also been raised about retinol's possible long-term carcinogenic effects based on rodent studies. Yet, more human studies are needed to confirm these risks.

Bakuchiol Serum is a naturally derived retinol-alternative treatment to help smooth the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines while increasing hydration. Bakuchiol, the key ingredient, should be sourced sustainably from the Ayurvedic Babchi plant. While gentle enough for most sensitive skin types, I would use care as I have read that it can create some redness.
